Rossi heads to Barcelona gunning for four in a row

Tuesday, 03 June 2008
MotoGP World Championship leader Valentino Rossi will be aiming for a fourth consecutive win this weekend, after his victories in China, France and his native Italy.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/MotoGP/Misc/non/223723_Valentino+Rossi+celebrating+victory+at+Muge llo-1280x960-jun3.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/Valentino+Rossi+celebrating+victory+at+Mugello)

Fiat Yamaha´s title-chasing Valentino Rossi makes the journey across the Mediterranean from Italy to Catalunya this week, as he goes in search of a fourth successive victory at the seventh race of 2008.
Having achieved a remarkable seventh straight home win at Mugello the brilliant Italian rider now heads for the Catalunya circuit at Montmelo, where he also boasts a superb record. The 29 year-old is the most successful rider in history at the Barcelona track, with eight wins and eleven consecutive podium appearances to his name at the scene of round seven.
Rossi´s magical home victory on Sunday extended his standings lead to 12 points over Repsol Honda´s Dani Pedrosa and the five-time former MotoGP World Champion will look to consolidate that advantage at a venue where he remains the only rider to have taken victory in all three Grand Prix classes.
The Yamaha rider went from a record setting pole position to second place at Catalunya last year but is determined to return to the form he showed there when dominating for the previous three seasons.
`Mugello was a fantastic victory and it´s a great feeling to have won three races in a row this season, only one less than we won in the whole of last season!´ stated Rossi. `Last year I had a great fight with Casey Stoner at Catalunya but I couldn´t quite beat him. However, this year our bike and tyres are working brilliantly and so I am confident that we will be able to fight. We will be very motivated and hard to beat.´
Davide Brivio, Rossi´s Fiat Yamaha Team Manager, added, `With this race coming so soon after Mugello we´re still on a high after our exciting win there and now we must try to do the same again in Spain. Our rider, our bike and our tyres are working very well together and so I hope we can remain concentrated and focused and try to make the most of a visit to another of Valentino´s favourite tracks.´

Lorenzo wants to entertain fans but thinks title could be gone

Tuesday, 03 June 2008
After the disappointment of his Mugello crash Jorge Lorenzo thinks the 2008 MotoGP title is beyond his grasp, but is determined to keep enjoying his rookie premier class season.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/MotoGP/Misc/non/223631_Jorge+Lorenzo+in+the+Fiat+Yamaha+garage-1280x960-jun1.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/Jorge+Lorenzo+in+the+Fiat+Yamaha+garage+7)

Double 250cc World Champion Jorge Lorenzo has already caught the eye in MotoGP this season, making an electric start to the year with a trio of pole positions, victory in Portugal, four podium appearances and some spectacular crashes.
Still riding injured following his huge highside in China, the young Spanish rider has been getting on with his job and was in the running for another top result on Sunday at Mugello until he crashed out of the Italian race on lap six.
Despite still being third in the general standings, 18 points ahead of World Champion Casey Stoner in fourth, Lorenzo believes his round six crash means a shot at the title in his debut MotoGP campaign is now unrealistic – as he trails his Fiat Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi by 28 points.
A philosophical Lorenzo told motogp.com at the official Gran Premi Cinzano de Catalunya presentation in Barcelona on Tuesday, `We had a chance to win the championship, but I think after the crash we are out of it. So we have to concentrate on every race from now on just to have fun and to provide fun for everyone who watches on TV.´
Pragmatically reviewing his accident on Sunday he commented, `We crashed at Mugello and it is very disappointing, but we cannot change the past. We have to look to the future, stay motivated and the good results will return soon. Two hours after the race I had forgotten it and I was only thinking about this weekend´s race. We have good luck that we are riding again just one week later.´

A look at the Catalunya history books

Tuesday, 03 June 2008
This will be the seventeenth consecutive year that the Circuit de Catalunya has been used since it was first included in the World Championship in 1992.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2004/MotoGP/CAT/non/223726_Valentino+Rossi+leading+Sete+Gibernau+in+th e+2004+Catalan+GP-1280x960-jun3.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2004/Valentino+Rossi+leading+Sete+Gibernau+in+the+2004+ Catalan+GP)

motogp.com takes a look back over the history of Grand Prix racing at the Circuit de Catalunya, at Montmelo, just outside Barcelona. The accompanying video covers the highlights of GP racing at the track from 2002-06.
1992 – The very first 500cc race at the Catalunya circuit had representatives from three different manufacturers on the podium with Wayne Rainey, riding a Yamaha, winning from Mick Doohan on a Honda and Doug Chandler on a Suzuki. The 250cc podium was an all Italian affair with Luca Cadalora winning from Loris Reggiani and 20 year-old Max Biaggi, who had started from pole for the first time in his GP career.
1993 – For the second successive year three manufacturers were represented on the 500cc podium, with the top two being the same as 1992 but this time followed home by Kevin Schwantz riding a Suzuki. Max Biaggi won the 250cc race, his only win of the year riding an Erv Kanemoto prepared Honda.
1994 – A third successive victory for Yamaha in the 500cc race, this time ridden by Luca Cadalora, with Doohan finishing second for the third successive year. Biaggi again took the 250cc victory sharing the podium with fellow Italians Loris Capirossi and Doriano Romboni.
1995 – Alex Criville won the 500cc race to become the first Spanish rider to win a Grand Prix at the Catalunya circuit. Biaggi won the 250cc race for the third year in succession.
1996 – For the second year in succession a Spanish rider won the 500cc race; this time Carlos Checa taking his first ever Grand Prix victory, with Mick Doohan finishing second for the fourth time at the circuit. This was the 100th Grand Prix victory for Honda in the 500cc class and was also their most dominant performance ever in the premier-class with the first eight riders across the line riding Honda machinery. Once again the 250cc race was won by Biaggi riding an Aprilia.
1997 – Doohan took his first win at the Catalunya circuit after a race long battle with the two home town heroes Checa and Criville. Ralph Waldmann beat the previously dominant Biaggi in the 250cc race, after running off the track in the early stages of the race and dropping down to ninth before fighting his way through the field. Valentino Rossi took the first victory in the 125cc class for Aprilia at the Catalunya circuit on his way to taking his first world title.
1998 – Doohan ended up the victor after crossing the line behind Biaggi who was subsequently disqualified for ignoring first a stop-and-go penalty and then a black flag, for passing while yellow flags had been displayed on the second lap. Valentino Rossi won the 250cc race in front of his Aprilia team-mates Tetsuya Harada and Capirossi.
1999 – Criville repeated his victory of 1995 after a race long battle with team-mate Tady Okada, who he finally beat by just 0.061 sec with the third Honda works rider Sete Gibernau filling the final podium slot on only his second ride on the V4 Honda. Rossi repeated his 250cc victory of the year before, on his way to taking the world title.
2000 – Kenny Roberts gave Suzuki its first ever victory at the Catalunya circuit in a race run in wet conditions throughout. Olivier Jacque gave Yamaha its only victory in the 250cc class at the Catalunya circuit.
2001 – Rossi wins the last 500cc race at the Catalunya circuit in front of his great rival Biaggi. With this victory Rossi became the first rider to win in all three classes at this circuit.
2002 – Rossi won the first ever MotoGP race at the Catalunya circuit in front of team-mate Tohru Ukawa.
2003 – An historic win for Capirossi, giving Ducati their first ever victory in the premier-class of Grand Prix racing and the first in any class since Mike Hailwood won the 125cc race at the Ulster GP of 1959. Dani Pedrosa became the first Spanish rider to win the 125cc GP race at the Catalunya circuit.
2004 – Rossi gave Yamaha their first premier-class victory at the Catalunya circuit since Cadalora in 1994. Marco Melandri's third place finish was his first ever podium on a MotoGP machine.
2005 –Rossi wins at the Catalan circuit for the fourth time in the premier-class in front of local hero Gibernau. The 250cc race resulted in the first ever all teenage podium in the class; Pedrosa, Casey Stoner and Andrea Dovizioso. Pedrosa's victory was the first in the 250cc class at the Catalunya circuit for a Spanish rider.
2006 – Another victory for Rossi in a race that had to be re-started after a multi-rider crash at the first corner which eliminated Capirossi, Gibernau and Melandri.
On Wednesday, motogp.com will bring you detailled highlights of the 2007 edition of the Catalan GP which saw Stoner, Rossi and Pedrosa dicing for the win.

Catalunya Racing Numbers

Thursday, 05 June 2008
This weekend´s visit to Catalunya signifies yet more exciting racing action, and also yet more facts and figures to watch out for in this week´s Racing Numbers.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/MotoGP/CAT/non/223757_Aerial+shot+of+the+Catalunya+circuit-1280x960-jun5.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/Aerial+shot+of+the+Catalunya+circuit)

46 – Race day in Barcelona is the 46th anniversary to the day of Suzuki taking their first ever Grand Prix victory – in the 50cc race at the Isle of Man TT in 1962, ridden by Ernst Degner.
35 years – On the 8th of June 1973 Jack Findlay took the victory in the Senior TT race in the Isle of Man riding a Suzuki. This win was highly significant in that it was the first ever win in the premier class of world championship motorcycle racing by a rider using Michelin tyres.
14 – Marco Simoncelli´s win at Mugello made him the fourteenth rider from Italy who has won Grand Prix in both the 125cc and 250cc classes. The others are: Luca Cadalora, Tarquinio Provini, Valentino Rossi, Carlo Ubbiali, Loris Capirossi, Marco Melandri, Loris Reggiani, Andrea Dovizioso, Doriano Romboni, Bruno Ruffo, Emilio Mendogni, Paolo Pileri and Mattia Pasini.
11- Catalunya is the circuit at which Valentino Rossi has had most podium finishes in his GP career, having finished in the top three every year since winning the 125cc race back in 1997 – a total of eleven successive podium finishes at the circuit.
5 – Following the race at Mugello there are still five riders who have scored points in all six MotoGP races held so far this year: Valentino Rossi, Dani Pedrosa, Loris Capirossi, Shinya Nakano and Toni Elias.

Lorenzo OUT of Catalunya race after practice crash

Friday, 06 June 2008
Concussion from an afternoon fall will prevent Jorge Lorenzo´s participation in the Gran Premi Cinzano de Catalunya.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/MotoGP/CAT/non/224015_Lorenzo+crashes+out+in+the+second+free+prac tice+session+at+the+Catalunya+Circuit-1280x960-jun6.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/Lorenzo+crashes+out+in+the+second+free+practice+se ssion+at+the+Catalunya+Circuit)

Following examination at the Institut Dexeus, Jorge Lorenzo has been ruled out of any further participation in the Gran Premi Cinzano de Catalunya. The Spaniard, who took an awkward fall in the second MotoGP free practice session on Friday afternoon, will be kept under observation for at least 48 hours as a result of a concussion picked up in the incident. Such a timescale obviously prevents the Fiat Yamaha rookie from riding on either Saturday or Sunday.
Doctor Xavier Mir of the University Institut Dexeus in Barcelona commented as follows:
`I can confirm that Lorenzo will not be able to compete this weekend after the tests done here at the Institut Dexeus have confirmed the following injuries:
`1. He suffered head trauma and lost consciousness. We made a neurological examination with a CAT scan and an MRI scan and from this we can confirm that there is no cranial haemotoma or haemorrage. However, he now needs to stay under observation for between 48 and 72 hours to see how this develops.
2. He sustained an injury to the 4th and 5th finger on the right hand, where he has lost some skin. He also has an abrasion of the extensor tendon. We need to see how this develops but it could be possible that he needs a small skin graft. 3. Various other bruises and grazes.´ Daniele Romagnoli, Team Manager

`Unfortunately today Jorge suffered another crash and it's clear that the luck is not with him at the moment. This morning we had a good session and things were going very well, we'd found a good base set up from which to work and we were quite happy with our progress. Then this afternoon started well but sadly after four laps we had another crash when Jorge lost the front at turn 11. He was going 130 km so it was quite a fast crash, but we checked the data and we can't see that he made any particular mistake. We were trying some different tyres and bike setting from the morning and we were feeling quite happy about how things were going so it's a great pity. Luckily he's avoided any further injury to his ankles, but the head injury means that he must undergo a period of rest and not take any further risks. We are very disappointed for Jorge, but the important thing now is that he has some rest and takes time to recover properly.´Masahiko Nakajima, Team Director

`We are very sorry about this matter and about the fact that Jorge is having to miss his home Grand Prix. My feeling is that, after the rain, the track condition today was not normal; it was worse than everyone could have expected. We hope that Jorge recovers quickly and that he will be able to come back in good shape, rested and relaxed, for the next race.´

Pedrosa continues Catalunya pace in afternoon session

Friday, 06 June 2008
Dani Pedrosa was once again the fastest rider on track on Friday afternoon in Barcelona.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/MotoGP/CAT/non/223983_Dani+Pedrosa+in+action+in+Catalunya-1280x960-jun6.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/Dani+Pedrosa+in+action+in+Catalunya)

The fastest rider in the opening practice session, Dani Pedrosa made it a clean sweep from the two Friday MotoGP runs at the Circuit de Catalunya by further improving his times in the afternoon. The Spaniard began the preparations for his home race with a 1´43.017 lap of the tricky Barcelona track, which caught out half of the 18-rider field in one form or another.
Pedrosa was among the participants to take a fall, crashing his standard engine-powered Repsol Honda RC212V with just over ten minutes to go in the second session, immediately after clocking the fastest time of the day. He was unhurt in the crash.
Second fastest in the combined standings was Loris Capirossi, continuing his upturn in form onboard the Rizla Suzuki GSV-R. He trailed Pedrosa by just 0.006, with the top four covered by less than a tenth of a second. Capirossi ran off track twice in the afternoon run.
The remainder of the aforementioned top four were Fiat Yamaha´s Valentino Rossi and Ducati Marlboro´s Casey Stoner, after an eventful day for both riders. Rossi attracted attention for his special `Azzurri´ themed livery and leathers, whilst Stoner had early problems with the track that led to his crashing and running-off in the morning.
Alex de Angelis maintained his Mugello momentum with the fifth fastest time, ahead of Rizla Suzuki man Chris Vermeulen and his own San Carlo Honda Gresini teammate Shinya Nakano.

Learning the Catalunya circuit, James Toseland was eighth fastest, whilst the top ten was completed by American duo Nicky Hayden and Colin Edwards. The biggest crash of the afternoon befell Jorge Lorenzo, local rider and World Championship contender. He hit the ground from a highside at a lower altitude than that of his Shanghai spill, but his momentum made for a bumpy journey through the gravel trap. The Fiat Yamaha man was taken to the Clinica Mobile and took no further part in the afternoon session, with the latest news on his condition indicating a fractured right ring finger and an ankle contusion.
Another rider stopping early was John Hopkins, who completed just a handful of laps before a highside on his Kawasaki Ninja ZX-RR, whilst Randy de Puniet had his second crash of the day in the afternoon outing.

Stoner goes fastest before rain hits Catalunya track

Saturday, 07 June 2008
Casey Stoner takes the top spot in the final MotoGP free practice session, hit by rain in the final fifteen minutes.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/MotoGP/Misc/non/224085_Casey+Stoner+in+action-1280x960-jun7.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/Casey+Stoner+in+action)

Last year´s racewinner in Catalunya, Casey Stoner put his Friday grip problems behind him with the fastest time of Saturday morning. The Ducati Marlboro rider shaved 0.004 off Dani Pedrosa´s fastest lap to also lead the combined standings in Barcelona, with his 1´43.013 hot lap coming before a smattering of rain fifteen minutes from the end of the session.
Said rainfall is likely to present a tricky challenge for the riders in terms of tyre choice for the afternoon qualifying session. Times and requirements will depend heavily on how much the track dries out in the next few hours.
Nicky Hayden was second quickest in the morning session, making strides with his Repsol Honda RC212V after also having problems with grip on the opening day. The American was just ahead of Tech 3 Yamaha´s Colin Edwards and current standings leader Valentino Rossi, with a top six also including Chris Vermeulen and James Toseland all within a second of Stoner´s time.
After crashing twice on Friday, Randy de Puniet improved on his pace onboard the LCR Honda satellite machine, going faster than factory rider and previous fastest man Pedrosa. Another satellite rider, Andrea Dovizioso also featured in the top ten, ahead of Loris Capirossi.
Kawasaki´s John Hopkins passed a late fitness test to participate in the session, having suffered a serious back contusion four laps into the second free practice outing. He was eleventh fastest after riding through the pain barrier. As reported yesterday, Jorge Lorenzo will not be cleared for action this weekend after his own spill and subsequent concussion.

Stoner plays the spoiler with Catalunya pole position

Saturday, 07 June 2008
Casey Stoner sets a new pole record at Catalunya, for his first top spot since the 2007 visit to Misano.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/MotoGP/CAT/non/224237_Casey+Stoner+in+action+in+Catalunya-1280x960-jun7-2.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/Casey+Stoner+in+action+in+Catalunya+2)

With his first pole position since the race at Misano in 2007, World Champion Casey Stoner broke his top spot drought in qualifying for the Gran Premi Cinzano de Catalunya. The Australian did so with a new record time of 1´41.186, preventing a home pole for Repsol Honda´s Dani Pedrosa.
Last year´s racewinner, Stoner had a spectacular last lap of the Barcelona circuit where he cut his teeth in the Spanish championship, putting behind him any grip problems experienced early on Friday. The 22 year-old had been fastest in the previous two practice sessions.
For Pedrosa, another front row will not come as too much of a disappointment, with his other immediate title contenders either down the order or out of action. The big worry for the home rider will be a breakaway from the man immediately to his left on the grid, and whether the standard Honda RC212V engine still being used by the factory team has the power to stick with the Ducati Desmosedici GP8 over the long home straight. A bike problem early on left him without time to test his race tyres, and using his second machine.
The Repsol Honda representation on the front row will be two-strong tomorrow afternoon, Nicky Hayden taking off from the first line of attack for the first time in 2007. He put his cards on the table late on in the session, with only extremely impressive runs from Stoner and Pedrosa ousting him from the top spot.
On the front row last year, Randy de Puniet was using a different machine and tyres to those of 2007, taking his Michelin-shod LCR Honda to the head of the second line. The Frenchman is still suffering from a finger injury picked up in Mugello, but showed that he has some serious pace despite the pain.
Tech 3 Yamaha´s Colin Edwards and James Toseland completed the top six, astonishingly all within the pole position record set by Valentino Rossi last season. Edwards in particular is very confident for the race, having worked for distance over the past two days.
Andrea Dovizioso had a lot of work to do in order to correct a rear end problem from Friday, but appeared to have got to the root of the issue as he took seventh spot. The third row also includes Rizla Suzuki´s Chris Vermeulen and Fiat Yamaha´s World Championship-leading rider Valentino Rossi, who lost his chance of pole when he caught his wheel on the grass late on.
There was a final five minute crash for Marco Melandri in the hour-long session, and also some usage of the newly-asphalted chicane run-off section by Loris Capirossi

Rossi predicting hard race from third row

Saturday, 07 June 2008
Qualifying ninth in Catalunya, Valentino Rossi sees a difficult time ahead as he looks to continue his recent winning ways.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/MotoGP/CAT/non/224291_Valentino+Rossi+leaving+the+Fiat+Yamaha+gar age+in+Catalunya-1280x960-jun7.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/Valentino+Rossi+leaving+the+Fiat+Yamaha+garage+in+ Catalunya)

Even the best of riders inevitably have their Achilles heel in some shape or form, and that of Valentino Rossi is surely getting away fastest from the line. Luckily, the calibre of his riding over the duration of a race means that this is very often a point of little consequence, but the Italian will need every little advantage he can with Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa on the front row, and him way back down in ninth.
`It was a bad qualifying session,´ admitted Rossi, who experienced difficulties with his setup despite a fast run on Friday afternoon.
`There were a lot of problems with the qualifying tyres, and for sure it will be another hard race. We tried to improve the setting but were not able to fix the problem, we were not fast enough.
`The tyre will be quite difficult for 35 laps, and we have to work all Saturday afternoon to try and fix things. The plan is to try and get this right; everyone is fast, but the race is very long.´
Rossi is currently the leader of the World Championship, and has never finished off the podium in Catalunya –a record that he will not give up easily.

Rossi contract renewal discussion progressing positively

Sunday, 08 June 2008
Yamaha Motor Racing Managing Director Lin Jarvis is confident of re-signing five-time premier class World Champion Valentino Rossi on a new two-year contract.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/MotoGP/GBR/non/224403_Valentino+Rossi+shows+off+his+Azzurri+team+ kit+at+Catalunya-1280x960-jun8.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/Valentino+Rossi+shows+off+his+Azzurri+team+kit+at+ Catalunya)

Following recent comments by MotoGP standings leader and mutli-World title winner Valentino Rossi that he is hoping to renew his contract with Yamaha in the coming months, the Managing Director of Yamaha Motor Racing Lin Jarvis has given an update on the progression of discussions between the parties.
Jarvis and Rossi have separately commented that a two-year agreement to cover the 2009 and 2010 is on the cards and the deal is expected to be completed by this summer´s break in MotoGP races, after the visit to Laguna Seca in July.
Jarvis told motogp.com, `At Mugello, as scheduled, we had a meeting, Masao Furusawa, Valentino and myself. It was a very positive meeting. The good news, not only for us, but for MotoGP, is that we are discussing a two year programme with Valentino.´
`I think 90% certainty has become 95% and we are in agreement on the main line. Basically, there is nothing really complicated to sort out, it is simply that it is a big contract. There are always details and that´s it, we just need to get the paperwork done.´
In response to the question as to whether Rossi´s current three-race winning streak had made the contract renewal discussion any smoother, Jarvis commented, `I think it has made it easier in the sense that if he is winning races he is enjoying himself, he is having fun and he is confident with the Yamaha package, which is giving him what he needs.´
`From our point of view that (winning races) was important, but not a condition, though I think for Valentino, to give him that security and confidence to make that next two year step with Yamaha, it is important for him.´

Rossi mounts comeback attempt in MotoGP warmup

Sunday, 08 June 2008
Valentino Rossi fine tuned his race pace on Sunday morning, ahead of a ninth position start.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/MotoGP/CAT/non/224406_Valentino+Rossi+in+action+in+Catalunya-800x600-jun8.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/Valentino+Rossi+in+action+in+Catalunya)

The man with it all to do in Catalunya, Valentino Rossi came out swinging in the warmup session for the Gran Premi Cinzano de Catalunya. The World Championship leader clocked a time of 1´43.182 in the morning session, working on his race setup for what will be a tough task from ninth on the grid.
Second fastest was Colin Edwards on the satellite Tech 3 Yamaha M1, the quickest Michelin-shod rider of the runout, whilst poleman and 2007 racewinner Casey Stoner was third. Stoner has won the past three races that he has started from pole position.
Joining him on the front row this afternoon, Nicky Hayden was also alongside Stoner on the Sunday morning timesheet. The Repsol Honda rider was just three tenths down on Rossi´s hot lap.
Alex de Angelis, Andrea Dovizioso, Chris Vermeulen, Randy de Puniet, John Hopkins and Loris Capirossi completed the top ten in an incident-free session, whilst final front row starter Dani Pedrosa was thirteenth fastest.

Di Meglio retakes 125cc World Championship lead with Catalunya victory

Sunday, 08 June 2008
Frenchman Mike di Meglio returned to the 125cc top spot in Catalunya, after a second victory of 2008.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/125cc/CAT/non/224511_Mike+di+Meglio+takes+second+2008+win+at+Cat alunya-1280x960-jun8.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/Mike+di+Meglio+takes+second+2008+win+at+Catalunya)

A Mike di Meglio victory and crashes for two home favourites spoiled the expected Spanish fiesta in Catalunya, as Ajo Motorsport´s French star held his nerve for a third win of 2008 and the leadership of the World Championship.
Di Meglio started from second on the grid, and was the only rider to stick with the local riders in the early stages. His toughest challenge for victory came from Nico Terol, but when the Spaniard crashed on the penultimate lap –shortly after a fall from fellow countryman Joan Olive- the new series leader could breathe a little easier before passing the chequered flag.
In second place with the best result of his career to date, poleman Pol Espargaro was under two-tenths of a second behind Di Meglio, holding off World Champion Gabor Talmacsi and taking his second consecutive podium. The Belson Derbi rider made a late push after stalking the leaders, avoiding a Talmacsi slipstream on the final straight.
Grizzly Gas Kiefer Racing´s Stefan Bradl showed his experience of the Catalunya Circuit with fourth place, having learned the intricacies of the track through his time racing in Spain, whilst previous World Championship leader Simone Corsi had a respectable fifth place finish that allowed him to pick up more valuable points.
Scott Redding, Stevie Bonsey and Sandro Cortese also featured in the top ten, ahead of Sergio Gadea in ninth. The Mafre Aspar rider had to come back through the field after being forced wide by Nico Terol on lap eight.
Marc Marquez completed the top ten with the best result of his rookie season, onboard the Repsol KTM.

Simoncelli wins second consecutive 250cc race

Sunday, 08 June 2008
Marco Simoncelli won his second successive race in the 250cc class in northeast Spain, closing the gap in the overall classification.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/250cc/CAT/non/224521_Marco+Simoncelli+in+action+in+Catalunya+250 cc-1280x960-jun8.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/Marco+Simoncelli+in+action+in+Catalunya+250cc)

Marco Simoncelli cut the lead in the 250cc World Championship to just three points with his second consecutive race victory, which came after a thrilling last lap battle with Alvaro Bautista.
Whilst there may have been controversy surrounding his Mugello maiden win, the Metis Gilera rider´s latest triumph was inarguably a clean one. Bautista had just to hold Simoncelli off on the 23rd and final lap, but found himself experiencing yet more bad luck as the in-form Italian pressured him into running wide.
Attempting to make up ground, Mapfre Aspar rider Bautista could not close Simoncelli down on the final corners, and had to settle for second place in a race that by all accounts should have been his.
The previous man to lose out to Simoncelli, Hector Barbera completed the podium places at his home race. The Team Toth Aprilia rider had been fighting early on with the leading duo, but could not avoid a breakaway and had simply to keep his cool and round off the rostrum.
Alex Debon came in fourth, continuing his assault on the title, whilst Thomas Luthi and Mattia Pasini also featured in the top six.
Hiroshi Aoyama was the highest placing KTM rider in seventh, with teammate and World Championship leader Mika Kallio forced into retirement with a mechanical failure for the first time this season.
Hector Faubel, Julian Simon and Lukas Pesek were the final threesome in the top ten.

Pedrosa, Rossi and Stoner give thoughts from the MotoGP podium

Sunday, 08 June 2008
Race winner Dani Pedrosa and his fellow podium finishers all faced the cameras after the Gran Premi Cinzano de Catalunya to give their thoughts on the Barcelona showdown.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/MotoGP/CAT/non/224581_Pedrosa+Rossi+and+Stoner+on+the+podium+at+C atalunya-1280x960-jun8.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/Pedrosa+Rossi+and+Stoner+on+the+podium+at+Cataluny a)

Dani Pedrosa – Race Winner
`I don't know where the pace came from. It was a fantastic race, amazing to win. I won in 125cc and 250cc here, so now to win in MotoGP is great. The other two were pushing hard. I went to a different setting than yesterday, and it worked.´
Valentino Rossi – Second Place
`What a race! I´m very happy; I had a lot of fun with overtaking. I´m pleased with 20 points, but knew that if we were going to beat Dani then we´d have to start at the front. It was a great battle with Casey, which I enjoyed a lot.´
Casey Stoner – Third Place
`For some reason we had no rear feeling entering the corners from the first lap. I lost a lot of confidence because in these corners you need hard braking as you´re cornering. Generally I wasn't happy at all with my riding today. In the end it was just a battle with vale at the end; he was close to me a few times, I could feel him. I have to be happy with a podium in any case.´

Catalunya test cut short by heavy tumble for Pedrosa

Monday, 09 June 2008
Repsol Honda riders Dani Pedrosa and Nicky Hayden commenced a two-day test session at Catalunya this afternoon, but yesterday´s race-winner Pedrosa ended the day in hospital after a heavy tumble at the one/turn two chicane.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/MotoGP/Misc/non/223829_Dani+Pedrosa+in+action-1280x960-jun6.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/Dani+Pedrosa+in+action+2)

Both riders had planned to spend the day doing back-to-back tests with the RC212V spring-valve and pneumatic-valve engines. Pedrosa started with the conventional engine (best lap time: 1m 43.48s), then switched to the pneumatic-valve unit, but that outing (best lap time: 1m 43.81s) was cut short by a minor electrical problem, so the Spaniard swapped machines again. It was during this outing that Pedrosa suffered a highside tumble, landing heavily on his back. He was taken to Barcelona´s Dexeus hospital where x-rays confirmed that he has no broken bones, but he has bruised his back and will need 48 hours of rest and anti-inflammatory medication. Pedrosa will not test tomorrow.
Hayden meanwhile evaluated both engines. The American was happy with the pneumatic-valve engine´s top speed and rideability and spent most of his time working on set-up with that engine. Tomorrow he will focus on race-distance tyre testing with the same engine.
Nicky Hayden, fastest lap: 1m 42.721s (70 laps)
´It went smooth today. We tried the new bike, my feeling with it was good, it had some good points. But we need more time to check the bike in a long distance situation. We tried some general setting things with it, and we only using race tyres, seeing what kind of endurance we could get because we had some problems with set-up during the weekend wearing the tyres more than we liked. We´ll run with it more tomorrow and maybe try a new chassis.´
Dani Pedrosa, fastest lap: 1m 43.552s ( 32 laps)
´The crash happened while I was changing direction in the first chicane. It was a highside and I fell quite heavily. My back and my shoulders hurt. I crashed at the start of my second lap of that run, maybe because the tyres weren´t fully up to temperature. When I fell I was doing some tyre testing with the standard engine. I only did ten laps with the pneumatic-valve engine so it´s still too early to give any comments.´

Rossi rounds off Catalunya visit with impressive test times

Tuesday, 10 June 2008
After claiming 20 important points to maintain his general standings lead at the Gran Premi Cinzano de Catalunya, Valentino Rossi left Barcelona after a successful test on Monday.

MotoGP World Championship leader Valentino Rossi and his Fiat Yamaha crew continued their work at the Circuit de Catalunya on Monday afternoon, following up Sunday´s crucial second place finish in the Barcelona race with five hours of testing at the Montmelo track.
Although the five-time premier class World Champion is undoubtedly one of the greatest riders in the history of the sport, even he has certain weaknesses and is the first to admit that race starts are not his strongest point.
Having seen eventual race-winner Dani Pedrosa make an electric start from second on the grid on Sunday to take the holeshot and then build up a 0.658s lead by the end of the first lap, Rossi is keen not to let that happen again, having never really had the chance to challenge his Catalan rival during the race as the Honda rider sped away at the front.
Rossi fought back from ninth position on the grid to finish second on Sunday having had set-up problems earlier in the weekend so the test was an important opportunity to work on settings, race starts and qualifying tyres.
The Italian completed 61 test laps on Monday and set the second fastest time of the day, with a best lap of 1´41.857, well over half a second better than his Saturday qualifying effort.
At the end of the day Rossi told motogp.com, `It was an important test because the race on Sunday was not so bad, but we have improvements to make, especially with the setting of the bike and with tyres. We need to decide on our tyre choices for the coming races and it was a good day because I was faster with race tyres and qualifying tyres, after struggling on Saturday.´
Looking ahead to the next two races `The Doctor´ commented, `Personally I like Donington and Assen, but we will have to wait and see what the weather is like at both tracks, because it can be very strange. I´m happy with the M1 which is fast and good to ride, but it is especially important for us to understand our Bridgestone tyres because when we arrive at Donington and Assen it is like going there for the first time for us.´

Val in Spanje speelt parten

Stoner snelste tijdens verregende test
