Rossi facing season finale with confidence after Brno successes

Friday, 22 August 2008
The visit to the Czech Republic could not have been better for Valentino Rossi, who found improvements in post-race tests having taken victory at Brno last Sunday.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/MotoGP/Misc/non/229636_Valentino+Rossi+back+to+his+Fiat+Yamaha+box-1280x960-aug22.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/Valentino+Rossi+back+to+his+Fiat+Yamaha+box)

Having extended his World Championship lead to 50 points at the Cardion ab Grand Prix Ceske republiky last weekend Valentino Rossi was one of several MotoGP riders to stay on for two full days of testing at Brno – the exercise proving well worthwhile for the legendary Italian as he made further steps forward with an already competitive Yamaha M1-Bridgestone package.
Rossi set the second fastest time behind Casey Stoner on both Monday and Tuesday and looks in good shape as he approaches the last series of races in the 2008 season – and attempts to win back the MotoGP crown which he last won in 2005.
Staying on in Brno the 29 year-old star undertook an intensive programme of Bridgestone tyre testing, as well as working on electronics and general set-up. Although he did try some qualifying tyres on Tuesday his best time of 1´56.613 was set on a race tyre and was well inside the best lap from Sunday´s race.
`It was a good test,´ Rossi commented afterwards. `We tried a lot of things and I am happy because the work with the tyres, the suspension and the bike has been good. The lap times are not too bad and I think we have made an improvement for the last few races.´
Giving specific details on the new material he had received from his Japanese tyre suppliers, he added, `Bridgestone have worked a lot on the stability, on the grip on the edge, and to produce more agility. We have looked at both the front and rear and I think the tyres have taken another good step forwards.´
On his inability to match Stoner´s test times Rossi was not overly concerned, stating, `We know that Stoner is always very fast. He always pushes hard and he is very strong, so we have a great rivalry and that is why we work to try and beat him.´
Rossi will now aim to extend his championship lead on `home turf´, the Gran Premio Cinzano di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini taking place on Italian soil at Misano, just a short drive from the five-time MotoGP World Champion´s hometown of Tavullia.
Rossi´s Fiat Yamaha team manger Davide Brivio, meanwhile, reviewed the trip to the Czech Republic, saying, `We´ve had a full couple of days testing and everyone has worked very hard, with great results.´
`This is probably our last test of the season so it´s been very important for us to have this chance to check several small things, especially tyres, electronics and setting. We have had a long week here in Brno but both the race and the test have been very successful and now we´re looking forward to Misano.´

Rossi out to make amends at home race return

Tuesday, 26 August 2008
Valentino Rossi hopes to put his 2007 Misano demons to rest and send the home fans away happy on Sunday.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/MotoGP/Misc/non/220916_Valentino+Rossi+in+action+in+Shanghai+MotoG P-1280x960-may4.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/Valentino+Rossi+in+action+in+Shanghai+MotoGP+2)

MotoGP´s return to Misano in 2007 was supposed to be Valentino Rossi´s day. The Italian, chasing a sixth premier class title, was finally able to undertake a true `home race´ at the circuit located just 10km from Tavullia, and thousands of fans would be present to spur him on. However, it all ended on a sour note when he was forced to retire early on with a mechanical problem, and this year `The Doctor´ is determined to alleviate the pain of last year.
`I´m really excited to be going to Misano in such good shape and leading the championship,´ says the Fiat Yamaha man, 50 points clear of reigning World Champion and 2007 Misano racewinner Casey Stoner.
`Last year the race was a huge disappointment for us, a very low point of the season and especially sad because it happened in front of my home fans. But this time things are very different; we´ve had two fantastic races in a row and we are feeling very strong and very confident. We are out to make up for 2007!
The driven Italian is never in need of motivation and, as has become a regularity during his MotoGP career, he has a record in his sights. Having equaled and then bettered Angel Nieto´s all-time total of race victories early on in the season, Rossi now targets parity with MotoGP Legend Giacomo Agostini´s premier class win record of 68. Agostini is sure to be watching on, as will the hordes of Rossi fans preparing once more for their march to Misano.
`Misano is so close to my home town of Tavullia that I know there will be an army of Italian fans there, and I hope it´s going to be a great party for all of them. Last year there was some terrible weather before the race as well so I really hope that this year we have sunshine and we can enjoy a fantastic race by the sea!´ says the 29 year-old, who has warmed up for the event with consecutive victories at Laguna Seca and Brno.

Stoner vows to keep fighting in title push

Tuesday, 26 August 2008
MotoGP World Champion Casey Stoner is not thinking of throwing in the towel as he aims to end Valentino Rossi´s winning streak this weekend.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/MotoGP/Misc/non/229668_Ducati+Marlboro+riders+Casey+Stoner+and+Mar co+Melandri-1280x960-aug26.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/Ducati+Marlboro+riders+Casey+Stoner+and+Marco+Mela ndri)

Casey Stoner left Misano last year with an 85-point lead in the MotoGP World Championship, having taken another outstanding victory whilst rival Valentino Rossi fell by the wayside. Returning to the San Marino round this year, things have made a sharp 180 degree turn; Rossi now holds the advantage with just six races to go, 50 points clear of the Ducati Marlboro man. Stoner has been riding well in recent races, and is not going to lie down with the title still hanging in the balance.
`We´ll see what happens (at Misano) but we´re in good shape - the gap in the championship is big but we´ll keep fighting until it´s over,´ states a determined Stoner, the winner of the 2007 Misano race from pole position.
`We had a great result at Misano last year and that, added to the fact that we´re in good shape with the set-up and the tyres, means we can be reasonably confident of another good result here. After the last few races and in the recent test at Brno we´ve managed to improve the set-up even more so we´re confident of putting on a good show for the home fans at Misano.´
Stoner is on a six-race streak of pole position starts, although his most recent Grand Prix outing ended in disaster when he crashed out whilst leading in Brno. With the Australian having dominated the practice sessions on race weekends for the past three months, even Rossi has acknowledged that 50 points is not a big enough gap to afford early celebrations.
On the other side of the Ducati factory team garage, Marco Melandri is preparing for his final six races on the Desmosedici GP8. Whether he is confirmed as a Kawasaki rider for 2009 over the course of the weekend remains to be seen, with the deal pending the official `Team Green´ stamp of approval from HQ in Japan, but the Italian is determined to end his year on a positive note, especially at his home race.
`I was born a few kilometres from Misano and I really feel at home at this circuit. It is still quite a new circuit for us and this year they´ve altered turn one again,´ says Melandri, who suffered a nasty crash at last year´s race in an extended practice session.
`There are a lot of slow corners and it´s not easy to overtake so qualifying well and getting a good start are even more important than usual. In the Brno test we found a few set-up modifications that I liked and we hope they also work at this track. Obviously it would give me great satisfaction to have a good race here - more than anything for the team

Misano set for Italian Grand Prix milestones

Wednesday, 27 August 2008
This weekend's race at Misano could see new records set by Italian riders.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/MotoGP/Misc/non/229675_Italian+riders+Loris+Capirossi+and+Andrea+D ovizioso+in+action+MotoGP-1280x960-aug27.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/Italian+riders+Loris+Capirossi+and+Andrea+Dovizios o+in+action+MotoGP)

The most successful nation in the history of the World Championship, Italy has the chance to set a series of milestones at the Misano circuit on Sunday. Four Italian riders are making the short trip to the San Marino track to represent their country, and all have the chance to put their name into the record books.
The record everyone will be watching out for is that targeted by Valentino Rossi, who could equal MotoGP Legend Giacomo Agostini´s record of 68 premier class victories with a win in front of his hordes of fans. The Fiat Yamaha rider has drawn ever-closer to the feat with two consecutive triumphs at Laguna Seca and Brno.
A Rossi victory or one for Loris Capirossi, Andrea Dovizioso, Marco Melandri or any number of 125cc & 250cc competitors would also provide an outstanding feat for Italy itself. The country has provided 699 race wins in the various classes of the World Championship, and the magic 700 could be achieved this Sunday should the red, white and green flag be raised before the end of the afternoon.
Capirossi simply has to line up on the grid to claim the record for Grand Prix event appearances, having equaled Alex Barros´ feat of 276 last time out. The Rizla Suzuki rider took a podium finish in the Czech Republic, and could reach the 100 rostrum milestone on appearance number 277

Rossi acknowledges `added pressure´ of Misano spotlight

Thursday, 28 August 2008
With thousands of fans arriving in Misano with the expectation of a pouplar home victory, World Championship leader Valentino Rossi admits that there is added pressure on his shoulders this weekend.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/MotoGP/RSM/non/229718_Valentino+Rossi+at+the+San+Marino+press+con ference-1280x960-aug28.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/Valentino+Rossi+at+the+San+Marino+press+conference )

The Gran Premio Cinzano di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini of 2007 was a big disappointment for Valentino Rossi, with `The Doctor´ unable to finish the race due to a technical fault with his Yamaha M1. Such disappointment for both rider and fans has only served to up expectations for this year´s visit to Misano, as the Italian admitted in the pre-event press conference on Thursday.
`It is very special here because I am so close to home and of course that means there is added pressure,´ acknowledged the Fiat Yamaha star. `I have had a lot more requests for tickets this time compared to last year at Misano as the situation in the championship is much better for me at present, so I hope I can put on a great show for all my fans here.´
Whereas last year Rossi was trailing eventual World Championship leader Casey Stoner in the standings, in 2008 the Italian is some 50 points clear of the Australian at the head of the classification.
`This year we arrive here in good shape after showing great speed in recent races. We have just had a good test in Brno where we found some good things for the bike, so the target now is to continue at this high level in the forthcoming races.´
Using last year´s DNF frustration as motivation for this weekend, the legendary Italian added, `Last year here was a big disappointment. We worked hard and put in the maximum effort, with things going well in the practices. We needed a good result, a podium. I started from the front row and I had good pace at the beginning, but after three laps my engine stopped. It was one of the most difficult times of my career so this year we have to make it better!´

Racing Numbers for Misano

Thursday, 28 August 2008
The facts, fancies and figures relevant to this weekend´s race at Misano, in the latest edition of Racing Numbers.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/MotoGP/Misc/non/229679_MotoGP+group+in+action-1280x960-aug28-2.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/MotoGP+group+in+action+17)

21- The final day of qualifying at Misano is the 21st anniversary of the very first Grand Prix victory for Aprilia, which coincidentally was also at the San Marino Grand Prix at Misano. This first race win was in the 250cc class by Loris Reggiani. In the 318 races held in the 250cc class starting at the San Marino GP on 1987 Aprilia have taken 135 victories, which is a single victory more than Honda during this period. These 135 victories have been achieved by 24 different riders, the most successful of which is Max Biaggi with 23 wins.
15.004– Valentino Rossi´s winning margin (in seconds) at Brno is the biggest ever in the four-stroke MotoGP era in a dry race, taking the record from Dani Pedrosa (who won in Germany last year with by margin of 13.166 seconds) The last time that a rider won a premier-class race by more than 15 seconds was when Mick Doohan won the 1997 Austrian Grand Prix by 22.077 seconds.
13– San Marino riders have won a total of 13 Grand Prix races shared between two riders – Manuel Poggiali with twelve wins (7 x 125cc, 5 x 250cc) and Alex de Angelis with a single 250cc victory.
10– There have been ten previous San Marino Grand Prix events. The first San Marino Grand Prix was held at Imola in 1981. Three different circuits have hosted the San Marino Grand Prix – Imola twice (1981 & 1983), Mugello four times (1982, 84, 91 and 93) and Misano on four occasions (1985, 86, 87 and 2007).
7– At the last seven races there have been three different manufacturers represented on the podium in MotoGP.
6– Casey Stoner has started from pole at the last six races, the longest sequence of successive poles on a four-stroke MotoGP machine. It is the longest sequence of successive poles in the premier-class since Mick Doohan started from pole at twelve successive races in 1997.
5– The first five riders across the line last year in the MotoGP race at Misano were using Bridgestone tyres.
5– The first five riders home in the MotoGP race in Brno were riding motorcycles from five different manufacturers. The only other time this has occurred during the four-stroke MotoGP era was last year in Catalunya.
2– The Misano MotoGP race last year was the first occasion in the four-stroke MotoGP era that Suzuki had two riders finish together on the podium.
1.249– The time (in seconds) covering the first five riders across the line in the 250cc race at Brno. This is the closest top five finish in the 250cc class since the Dutch TT in 1999, when 0.742 seconds covered the top five finishers in a race won by Loris Capirossi from Valentino Rossi, Jeremy McWilliams, Tohru Ukawa and Shinya Nakano.

Lorenzo sure of Misano and Michelin improvement

Thursday, 28 August 2008
Jorge Lorenzo gave his views on the upcoming race weekend at a Chupa Chups event in Riccione on Wednesday.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/MotoGP/RSM/non/229680_Jorge+Lorenzo+attends+a+Chupa+Chups+event+i n+Riccione-800x600-aug28.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/Jorge+Lorenzo+attends+a+Chupa+Chups+event+in+Ricci one)

Jorge Lorenzo made an early arrival in Misano on Wednesday, taking part in a presentation to commemorate 50 years of lollipop manufacturer Chupa Chups at the Aquafan park in Riccione. He took to the stage and signed autographs for fans at the event. The Spaniard has long been associated with the product, and was happy to be in attendance ahead of this weekend´s race.
`I feel closely linked with Chupa Chups…let´s say that they´ve been `my´ sponsor. I´ve always worn the daisy logo on my helmet, suck a Chupa Chup on the podium, and to be celebrating their fiftieth year is something special that makes me proud,´ said the Fiat Yamaha rider, who is hoping to return to podium-celebrating ways before the end of the year.
Lorenzo had a somewhat disappointing race at the last round of the World Championship, struggling with grip at Brno. He sees things going differently at Misano, however, and appears to be regaining the confidence that was missing after some nasty mid-season crashes.
`I would expect us to do better than in the last race. We are certainly capable of being regular top five finishers,´ added the winner of last year´s 250cc race at Misano.
Lorenzo stayed on at Brno last time for two days of testing and, despite catching a fever, felt that he had been able to make improvements to both his riding style and tyre options. Whilst grip was the main problem in the Czech Republic, the MotoGP rookie still has full confidence in rubber supplier Michelin.
`I have to trust in them right until the end; it´s a prestigious company with a lot of history and, because they have won many championships and allowed me to win a race this season, I would have to continue to believe in what they have and be eager to use it,´ he concluded.´

Stoner stuns with seventh successive pole position

Saturday, 30 August 2008
Casey Stoner extended his run of MotoGP pole positions with a late dash at Misano

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/MotoGP/RSM/non/230144_Casey+Stoner+in+action+in+Misano+MotoGP-1280x960-aug30-3.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/Casey+Stoner+in+action+in+Misano+MotoGP+5)

The top spot on the MotoGP grid will, for the seventh consecutive race, be occupied by reigning World Champion Casey Stoner tomorrow, with the Ducati Marlboro rider completing his clean sweep of practice session outings at Misano.
Stoner had to dig deep for the honour of leading off the Gran Premio Cinzano di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini, fighting back against some tough rivals on his final lap of the Saturday afternoon qualifying session. The Australian got back into his stride in the final two splits of the Misano circuit, with his 1´33.378 too much for even his most persistent challengers to match.
Half a second separated Stoner and World Championship leader Valentino Rossi´s fastest times on qualifying rubber, although the latter had been poised for a popular home pole until the last minute of the run. Rossi will start from second on the grid for the third race in a row, an important placing if he is to catch his hitherto uncatchable rival.
Stoner also extends his lead in the BMW M Award, having picked up his latest Tissot watch as a pole position prize. He will not, however, be placing the timepiece on his wrist anytime soon, with his wrist heavily bandaged and braced to protect a scaphoid fracture.
Jorge Lorenzo returns to the front row for the first time since the Portuguese round in Estoril back in April, third on the grid alongside Fiat Yamaha teammate Rossi. The Spaniard had laid down some fierce lap times during the qualifying session, something that will please not just himself and his team but also tyre manufacturer Michelin.
Randy de Puniet just missed out on the front row with his LCR Honda RC212V, the fastest rider for the Japanese factory. He is joined by Alice Team´s resurgent Spaniard Toni Elias and Repsol Honda´s Dani Pedrosa on the second line.
Chris Vermeulen, Shinya Nakano and James Toseland will be just behind the trio when the lights go out at Misano on Sunday afternoon.

Front row position gives Rossi chance to excite crowd

Saturday, 30 August 2008
Valentino Rossi will attempt to strengthen his World Championship chances and excite his thousands of fans at Misano on Sunday, getting away from the front row of the grid.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/MotoGP/Misc/non/230270_Valentino+Rossi+in+the+Fiat+Yamaha+garage+M otoGP-1280x960-aug30.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/Valentino+Rossi+in+the+Fiat+Yamaha+garage+MotoGP+4 )

Ready to put the demons of his 2007 Misano visit squarely behind him at the Gran Premio Cinzano di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini, five-time MotoGP World Champion and local hero Valentino Rossi will get away from second on the grid, just behind pole man Casey Stoner on Sunday.
The Italian rider was happy with his qualifying performance when he spoke to motogp.com on Saturday afternoon, but admitted he is still looking for a few more tenths before tomorrow´s 28-lap race.
`The lap was good but unfortunately Stoner in recent races has been incredibly fast and today he was again a little bit faster than us. But I am happy with the second place, because the front row is always great for starting. We are not at the maximum on race tyres. We have to make a change to the setting, we have to improve on Sunday. We have a lot of data and we need to try and be faster for the race,´ declared Rossi.
The 29-year-old, who lives just 15km away in Tavullia, was made mayor of the small Italian town for the day, at a special local council meeting held at the circuit on Saturday - and he will receive massive support from the grandstands around the Misano track on Sunday afternoon.
He joked, `Well I am very famous in Tavullia! All the people know me so I think a lot of them voted for me as mayor! This is really my home Grand Prix because I live so close.´
Having seen his Fiat Yamaha charge slot his M1 onto the front row for the eighth time this season, team manager Davide Brivio, meanwhile, commented, `Well we have reached our main target because it is so important to start from the first row. We tried for pole position but Casey was very fast today.´
On the last minute tweaks the team will be making to Rossi´s race package Brivio also stated, `We will try to catch up with Casey in the warm-up by making a few little changes because he is faster in some parts of the track. We can adjust the suspension to help Valentino on corners and with the electronics we can improve the engine performance, to get a bit more acceleration.´

Stoner prepares for painful race in MotoGP warmup

Sunday, 31 August 2008
Casey Stoner continued to battle through the pain of a hand injury in warmup at Misano.

Despite winces and grimaces when sat in his Ducati Marlboro garage, on track at Misano Casey Stoner continued to appear in rude health during the premier class warmup. The MotoGP poleman was, as in every session during the race weekend, the fastest 800cc rider on track, clocking a 1´34.644 lap to put him at the head of the timesheet.
Fellow Australian Chris Vermeulen was second, some seven-tenths of a second behind Stoner, whilst third fastest was home favourite and front row man Valentino Rossi. Toni Elias, Dani Pedrosa, Colin Edwards, Alex de Angelis, Loris Capirossi, Jorge Lorenzo and Shinya Nakano also featured in the top ten during the 25-minute session.
Sylvain Guintoli was the only rider to crash during the session, suffering an innocuous lowside with his Ducati Desmosedici SAT.

Sunday, 31 August 2008
The MotoGP riders give their views on the exhausting San Marino round of the World Championship.

Valentino Rossi – Race Winner

`I´m very excited and tired. I felt some pressure before the race, with a lot of family and friends here; it´s only my dog that didn´t come here. I felt nervous, and struggled in practice with the setting. We fixed the bike for the race, and the race pace was a little slower because of the high heat. I rode round in 1´34 early, which was the target, but I lost some time with Dani (Pedrosa). Casey (Stoner) pushed a lot but didn´t get too far away from me. It´s a long race, so I don´t know if it is possible to have caught him. When he slid away I thought that it was very good for my championship chances. I still had to push, because Lorenzo doesn't give up. I won at my home race, so it feels like Mugello!´Jorge Lorenzo – Second Place

`I´m happy to be back here on the podium again after four months. Stoner crashed early, and after that I wanted to win, but to follow Valentino was complicated and difficult. I had to take so many risks in order to catch him, so in the end I preferred to finish second and regain more confidence. I´m so happy for us that we are first and second, like we were at Le Mans.´Toni Elias – Third Place

`I´m really happy with another podium. We started in very difficult shape, but quickly found good solutions. To finally to be on the podium at the end of the weekend is perfect. I´m free for next year if somebody wants me!´

Marathon tyre test begins Pedrosa´s Bridgestone association

Monday, 01 September 2008
Dani Pedrosa was the fastest rider on track in his first test with Bridgestone tyres, immediately improving on his fastest race lap from Sunday.

http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/MotoGP/Misc/non/230689_Repsol+Honda+Dani+Pedrosa-1280x960-sep1.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/Repsol+Honda+Dani+Pedrosa+2)

With just a day in which acclimatise himself to Bridgestone tyres before the next round of the MotoGP World Championship, Dani Pedrosa performed an extensive first test with Japanese rubber at Misano on Monday. The Repsol Honda rider completed some 81 laps of the San Marino circuit, having announced his switch from Michelin less than 24 hours beforehand.
Pedrosa´s fastest lap was a 1´34.652, some eight-tenths of a second quicker than his quickest time during Sunday´s race. The Spaniard´s marker proved unmatched by the other five regular riders out on track, four of which had prior experience of Bridgestone´s 2008 rubber. He returned to use of a pneumatic valve version of Honda´s 800cc engine alongside runs on the standard spring valve motor, although understandably the focus was on race tyres instead. No extensive qualifying tyre testing programme was undertaken by the 2007 MotoGP World Championship runner-up.
The man whose experience from the past two races will prove useful for Pedrosa, with his having ridden a factory spec Honda RC212V with Bridgestone tyres for the past two rounds, Shinya Nakano was second fastest onboard the San Carlo Honda Gresini standard engine version of the Japanese manufacturer´s bike. He was nearly eight-tenths of a second down on Pedrosa´s marker.
An absentee from the first practice session at Misano, Kawasaki´s John Hopkins played catch-up in the testing session with an extended series of laps. The Anglo-American´s teammate, Anthony West, was also in attendance, sandwiched between Randy de Puniet and Alex de Angelis on the Monday timesheet.
